Each Summer, designers deliver a collection full of feminine frills and floaty fabrics, but this year, the designers took it darker. The new romantic take on the current SS16 collections brought us gothic inspired lace designs, striking victorian silhouettes, strong and seductive looks but with a dishevelled aesthetic.

Look to McQueen, Balenciaga, Erdem and Proenza Schouler as just a few leading examples of how to work the lo-fi take on a traditionally romanticised and feminine season. Frills, ruffles and delicate sheer layers are not to be dismissed this Summer as they make up key elements of this trend. But infused with a touch of 60s rock chic attitude to add some edge.

This season is all about volume, all about ruffles. Now forget about girlish frills, this season, ruffles have grown up.

It's all about roughing up your ruffles this year. Ruffles for Spring Summer 2016 are here to add bold silhouettes, asymmetric tiered hems, voluminous sleeves and confident detailing to your wardrobe. Clash these traditionally feminine textures with androgynous accessories, edgy sheer layers and chunky bold shoes.

Whilst the season of Summer is so often associated with crisp white tones in the world of fashion. This time around, expect Spring Summer 2016 to be all about the contrast of black and white.

On the runways of New York, London and Paris, we saw a much bigger concentration of edgy gothic lace, sheer black numbers and dark ruffles than in previous years. Contrasting perfectly alongside awesome white slip dresses, fresh floaty dresses and crisp white layers.

The slip dress has to be the key buy for SS16. And there is no time like the present to start hunting down that essential dress to see you through the season. Whether trimmed with scalloped lace such as at Celine and at Givenchy, or floating satin styles such as at Maiyet and Narciso Rodriguez. Slip dresses in all shapes and styles are here.

All that is left, is for you to style up these dainty dresses your own way. Look to Burberry Prorsum for ways to capture that lo-fi style, or take inspiration from Emilio Pucci by layering long sleeve tees underneath.

Nineties inspired slip dresses will be an essential for this years festival scene. There is no one better than Saint Laurent for ways to style these delicate dresses with a pair of essential wellies and a stylish coat to make them festival perfect this Summer.

Take a look over our SS16 catwalk review and fall in love with the 90s slip dress trend yourself.
